Object detail

Cake of soap, "made expressly for U.S.S.C.o" is impressed on the face of the rectangular curved block. The Union Steam Ship Company started in 1875 and sailed coastal and trans-Tasman trade routes, gradually diversifying to passenger liners and mail routes to Vancouver and San Francisco. They are an example of the range of branded product that would have been found on board all ships owned by the Union Steam Ship Company. Items such as these soaps would have been taken as souvenirs by passengers and crew.
