Description
Commemorative coin and case. Presented to the director of Hobson Wharf by the representatives of Grootegast during the presentation of the model of the ship HEEMSKERCK. Front of coin has 'ABEL TASMAN HERDENKING / 1992' ('Abel Tasman Commemoration'; trans. from Dutch) and bust portrait of Abel Tasman. Reverse has 'Spaar en Voorschotbank' ('Savings and Advance Bank'; trans. from Dutch) across top circumference, a compass rose lower centre with fleur de lis North point, and Tasman's two ships HEEMSKERCK and ZEEHAEN illustrated in the centre. Outside front of case has an illustration in white, depicting side profile of Abel Tasman from head to waist, holding a double-edged sword and wearing a cap. Inside the lid is a silver maker's stamp, depicting a cadeuceus and the name ' 's RIJKS MUNT' in a circle, with the place name 'UTRECHT' stamped below the image. 's Rijks Munt later became De Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt (The Royal Dutch Mint; trans. from Dutch).
