Description
Shell of a Cook’s petrel, Pterodroma cookii, egg which has been blown and has one end damaged. Off white coloured shell with some staining. A blowing hole has been drilled in the shell. Ink inscription around blowing hole on egg: Cooks petrel / 20.7.1902 / Curtis Isle / "HINEMOA" / J.B.
Part of a collection of predominantly Pacific region sea shells and New Zealand seabird eggs held by Frances Shakespear. This egg collected from Curtis Island in the Kermadecs, probably by Captain John Bollons on a voyage of GSS HINEMOA, the government vessel, while servicing the lighthouse on the island.
Cook's petrels no longer breed on Curtis Island.
