Object detail

Description
Thwaites single steam engine from Northern Steam Ship Company vessel NGATIAWA. NGATIAWA was built in 1906 by D.J Dunlop & Co at Port Glasgow and she was eventually sold for scrap in 1934. From file notes by Jack Ward: NGATIAWA had twin 210 steam horsepower engines. This engine went up Kaitaia as a stand by plant when electricity was first put in the Far North. It was connected to the Kaitaia Co-operative Dairy Company's main boiler ready to steam in case of any power failure. The engine had a centrifugal pump attached to the kegs, but it was lost. It was the circulating pump that pumped water for the condenser. The main engine from NGATIAWA was later installed at Awanui with the generator and there was a large cooling tower outside. Jack presumed that on NGATIAWA this steam engine was pumping salt water through the condenser.
