There is a pencil inscription around blowing hole on the egg: Tufted penguin, Mr Cook.
Part of a collection of predominantly Pacific region sea shells and New Zealand seabird eggs collected by Frances Shakespear. Possibly collected from one of the southern offshore islands by a crew member on a voyage of GSS HINEMOA, the government vessel which supplied lighthouses and castaway depots.
Possible species:
Eastern rockhopper penguin, Eudyptes filholi from Campbell, Auckland or Antipodes Islands. [Egg c.75 x 53 mm]
Erect-crested penguin, Eudyptes sclateri from Antipodes or Bounty Islands. [Egg c.82 x 58 mm]
