Object detail
The TOTORORE was de-masted on 30 December 1985 eight days after leaving Cape Town, South Africa. Gerry Clark made the decision to reach Marion Island with a jury rig a route which afforded safer and more favourable currents the returning to South Africa at that time of year. Arriving there on 16 January 1986 the crew stayed ashore there to be returned to South Africa, the yachts rig was improved and Gerry Clark continued sailing to Western Australia via a number of islands to continue the expedition as planned.
The TOTORORE reached Fremantle on the 27 June 1986, amidst large yachts sailing, and was met by an inflatable from the New Zealand Challenge for the America's Cup, and then towed into the harbour by a customs launch.
Part of a large collection of written and audiovisual, photographic resources and equipment which belonged to Gerry Clark; most of which document his voyages in the Southern Ocean.
