Description
Black and white photograph of two soldiers; one on left wearing pith helmet and the other a lemon squeezer hat and light khaki drill cotton short-sleeved shirt and shorts - these worn by the New Zealand contingent serving in North Africa in World War Two. The men are standing above a carving of three monkeys at the Japanese Gardens, Helwan, Egypt. Cliff Hawkins is on the left, as identified by son Robert Hawkins.

Photograph corresponds to entry in 'Photo Index' of Cliff Hawkins with handwritten log of his photographs, location, subject and date. As: Page 5, entry 177; "In Japanese Gardens, Helwan, 15.6.41".
