Gratton J. (Colin) Grey was a New Zealand seafarer who was taken as a prisoner of war in 1942 when MV HAURAKI (1922) was captured by Japanese forces. He was held as a prisoner of war in Changi Jail in Singapore until his release in 1945.
The Gratton Grey archive includes a photograph album, World War II Merchant Navy medals and correspondence relaying broadcast radio messages received by people and in Australia and New Zealand listening, their correspondence transcribing the messages, which reached his mother Mrs. Winifred Grey during the time he spent as a prisoner of war.
Gratton J. (Colin) Grey was reported missing by New Zealand Prime Minister in a telegram received by his mother 31 July 1942 and subsequently repatriated by air from Singapore on the 17 of September 1945.
He returned to sea with the Mercantile Marine in 1946 serving on board the sailing ship PAMIR (1905).
